Line After Line...
No doubt, after viewing such drawings and engravings as those done by Alain Lovenberg, it's easy to see that it takes quite a bit of skill to create such an image from lines. Many people may be familiar with the type of artistic style from the portraits that grace modern paper currency.
This beautiful scene of a woman and her cat began as a moment captured by Alain Lovenberg with his camera. To lay out and perfect each line for this engraving, Alain first created a pencil drawing. The pencil drawing measures approximately 8" x 10" (203.2 mm x 254 mm), and Alain will translate this size onto a much smaller 2" x 4" (50.8 mm x 101.6 mm) engraved plate. The lines in his drawing are not nearly as many or as concise as they will be in the engraving. These lines, which flow up, down, left, and right, give form to every item in this scene.
To create each element, Alain carefully planned a place for each line that would depict volume, shape, and three-dimensions on a flat metal plate. On the first day of his Grand Masters course, students learned the angles and lengths for the graver face and heel as taught by Alain. Line after line, the students will gain understanding of this line method in order to product similar results like this beautiful project piece. Check back for this finished engraving by Alain.
