Learning Something New
No matter the experience or knowledge one has, there is always something more to learn. Even an engraver who has cut metal nearly his entire life can learn a new technique or method that will advance his skills further.
On the first day of Philippe Grifnée's Grand Masters course, the students worked through the basics of three-dimensional sculpting. During the demonstration, one student made the observant comment that the techniques for sculpting metal are similar to carving wood. Grifnée provided the details for a large flower to use as practice after his demonstration, and the students all began to work steadily to remove the metal, one layer at a time, in order to reveal the design.
Some used only hand-powered hammers and chisels like Grifnée, while others utilized the power of the pneumatic handpieces and a GraverMach. Both methods produce excellent results and take a notable amount of skill. Taking this advanced Grand Masters engraving course are several engravers who have excellent engraving skills. One of the students even teaches courses at the GRS Training Center throughout the year. Although these students are quite advanced, it just goes to show that there is always more to learn.
