Mountain Man by Lee Griffiths
With time and pressure, carbon changes to diamonds and artists produce interesting works of art. This little gem of a mountain man was engraved by GRS Training Center instructor Lee Griffiths. While at the Denver Knife Show, Griffiths worked on this demonstration piece over the course of three days.
Inspired by the local scenery, Griffiths said, "It seemed like a fun idea to do a mountain man since we were on the edge of the Colorado Rockies. I also wanted to utilize a number of different techniques: sculpting, bulino, scroll, etc." The mountain man 'Harry' is sculpted with some bulino engraving for details. Lee used flat gravers (37, 40, 45) for roughing in the form, punches to move and smooth the metal, and a 120° V-Point graver for some of the detail work. To get the worn-in leather texture of the hat, Griffiths used a stipple point and a small chisel (as a stipple point).
Griffiths engraved this 3" steel circle using a 90° graver with a round heel (45° face, 20° heel) for the nondescript flowing scroll outlines, and a 110° graver (45° face, 20° heel) for the various shade lines. During the demo, he engraved with a GraverMach using the Magnum and Monarch handpieces. Although more time would have gone into a commissioned piece, this piece looks pretty good for a quick trade show demo.
