Lee Griffiths' Dragon Plate
This plate, which Lee Griffiths engraved at the East Coast Custom Knife Show in February 2008, is another example of his wonderful affection for these mythical creatures. This Dragon Plate shows areas of sculpted and traditional engraving, much like the Dragon Gun. But because Lee engraved this piece at a show, he did not intend for this simple steel practice plate to become such an charming beauty.
To demonstrate his engraving skills in front of the onlooking crowds of the knife show, he began with a practice plate that comes with a GRS Laser Pattern. This particular pattern, which is lightly lasered on the metal, consists of the framing scrollwork designed and submitted to GRS by Sam Alfano.
However, Lee turned this simple stock pattern into a full scene. Instead of just engraving the scroll pattern to demonstrate, Lee created a unifying focal element in the dragon that nests quite nicely within the framing scrolls. Lee also added a twist to the two-dimensional laser pattern by sculpting the four connecting leaves on each sides. His overall treatment of the detailed dragon further enhances the illusion of depth in this engraving, and makes for a wonderful piece of engraving art.
